Silymarin refers to an extract from seeds of the Milk Thistle plant. The extract contains three bioflavonoids: silybin, silydianin,
and silychristin.
Milk Thistle seeds have been used for centuries to treat liver diseases, and that is how they are used today. Medical studies
show that silymarin extracts can prevent or repair liver damage from
- alcohol and other drugs
- pesticides and some other poisons
- hepatitis.
These effects appear to be due to silymarin’s antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities and its ability to block fibrosis.
Other studies indicate that silymarin can provide substantial protection against cancers induced by ultraviolet light.
