Vitamin D supplementation lowers risk of bone fractures
Last month’s Supplements in the News section reported on one of the latest media-generated paranoias over supplement usage
— it was claimed that vitamin A supplements weaken the bones and cause fractures.
This month, in an amusing contrast to last month’s so-called “news”, we have a report that Vitamin D (in contrast to Vitamin
A) strengthens the bones and prevents fractures. The reason for amusement is that this fact has been known for almost a hundred
years, yet is being treated by health journalists as if it were “news”. The pretext for these reports is a recent study that
quantified the lowered rate of fractures in elderly men and women.
By the way, Vitamin D happens to be an anabolic steroid — its anabolic effects take place mainly in bone rather than in muscle.
It will be interested to see if the congressional dingbats who are writing up new laws to ban anabolic steroidal supplements
will accidentally include Vitamin D in their ban.
