Folic acid prevents cleft lip and palate
Cleft lip and cleft palate are two of the most common major birth defects. The risk of having a child with these birth defects
is six times higher for women who have inherited certain forms of a folate-processing gene. A new study now shows that this
risk can be eliminated by folic acid (folate) supplements.

In other folic acid news, researchers have shown a connection between high homocysteine levels and poor results on tests of
mental ability. A similar connection has been found for the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Consequently, it is being
suggested that homocysteine suppressors would be useful for enhancing cognition and preventing Alzheimer’s.
