Supplement industry upset over coral calcium
One of the dietary supplement industry’s leading trade associations has asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the
Federal Trade Commission to take action against preposterous marketing claims being made by promoters of the dietary supplement
called ‘coral calcium’.
Some may think this is a case of “the pot calling the kettle ‘black’”, but in fact the supplement industry, by and large,
keeps its ‘hype’ level within bounds no looser than those of many other industries. (Consider the auto industry’s portrayal
of cars as cures for depression, loneliness, and lack of sex appeal; or the clothing industry’s promoting clothes as the key
to success in business, sex, and life in general.) The principal distributor of coral calcium appears to have thrown caution
to the wind and is blitzing the media with claims for coral calcium that it cannot possibly live up to. Such behavior tarnishes
the reputation of the supplement industry as a whole and gives ammunition to the industry’s enemies.
