The expanding horizons of green tea

Green tea seems to have become a hot research topic, and so we’re seeing new findings announced almost every day. The Miami Herald recently published a summary of the subject.

Researchers at Pace University have found that toothpaste containing green tea extracts “have an adverse effect on bacteria that cause strep throat, dental caries, and other infections”. [Let’s hope that they do more than merely “have an adverse effect” — we want those bacteria dead!] Anti-viral effects were also found.

Other researchers say that regular tea drinking can prevent halitosis (‘bad breath’).

Those who are dismayed by the condition of their skin may be encouraged by work done by Stephen Hsu at the Medical College of Georgia (USA), who studied a component of green tea called ‘EGCG’. Hsu’s work unfortunately was done with isolated skin cells, but it suggests that EGCG holds promise for treating skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, wrinkles and wounds.
