Anti-supplement crusade reaches new levels of insanity
If it weren’t for the fact that athletes’ rights are being trashed, it would be easy to laugh at the idiocy that has taken
hold of the sports world. Every month sees new and more radical actions and proposed actions for preventing athletes from
using performance enhancers. The list of banned substances grows too fast for anyone to keep track of it all. Athletes are
being prohibited from using not only the substances on the list, but substances that might be mistaken for substances on the
list, or even substances that someone might someday want to put on the list.
The latest ridiculous example of this totalitarian frame of mind comes from New Zealand, where athletes are being warned not
to take any supplements at all — not even minerals. Where does it go from here? Surely vitamins and protein supplements must
be off limits, too. Perhaps sports organizations will start testing athletes’ blood and urine to make sure they are not getting
an unfair advantage by eating too much meat and potatoes.
