Fish oil and Alzheimer’s

A study called the Chicago Health and Aging Project has shown a negative correlation between fish consumption and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Study participants, 65 to 94 years old, were reported to have been 60% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s during the four years of the study if they consumed fish at least once per week.

It is believed that omega-3 fatty acids are the key ingredients in fish that provide protection from Alzheimer’s disease (as well as from heart disease and cancer). Fish vary, however, in their omega-3 content, and fish are not labeled to tell you how much omega-3’s they contain. Fish oil supplements, on the other hand, list their omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid contents on the bottle labels. Are the labels accurate? A recent survey by the magazine Consumer Reports concluded that “…all 16 brands that we tested had the amount of omega-3s that they said they did.” Fish oil supplements are therefore the source of choice for omega-3 fatty acids.
