Indole-3-carbinol supplementation reduces lupus mortality in mice.
Researchers have revealed the results of a year-long study of the supplement indole-3-carbinol (I3C) as a treatment for lupus
in mice. Groups of lupus-prone mice were given I3C in their food for 7-12 months and compared to other groups that did not
get the supplement. At the age of 12 months, 80-100% of the supplement-treated mice were still alive as compared with 10-30%
of the untreated mice.

A previous study of I3C in humans was performed several years ago. It reported no significant improvement in lupus symptoms.
So, what gives? Before coming to the conclusion that I3C works in mice but not humans, we should notice that in the human
study the subjects were given I3C for only one week and then assessed three months later! The mice were given I3C for a substantial
fraction of their lives and assessed when they were a year old. (The lifespan of a typical healthy mouse is about 2 years.)
