Supplement combination reverses Alzheimer’s symptoms in dogs
Aged beagles suffer a decline in memory similar to the pre-Alzheimer’s stage in humans, and develop a build-up of beta-amyloid
protein in their brains similar to that found in humans with Alzheimer’s Disease. Beta-amyloid deposits are thought to be
responsible for much of the brain damage suffered by Alzheimer’s patients.
An Australian research team fed a group of 70 beagles a combination of nutritional supplements that included Acetyl-L-carnitine,
Alpha-lipoic acid, and vitamins C and E. The dogs, which ranged in age from 3 to 9 years at the beginning of the study, were
tested for learning ability and memory during the study. After two or three years on the regimen they began to make fewer
mistakes, and were able to cope with more complex tasks. At the end of the study, the dogs were doing better than they did
at the start. The researchers also showed that the regimen reduced the accumulation of beta-amyloid protein in the dogs’ brains.
