Theanine improves sleep, reduces fat accumulation
The use of green tea for inducing relaxation and improving sleep is old news to many tea-drinkers because they’ve experienced
these benefits personally. Similar effects have been seen by users of a supplement called ‘L-theanine’, one of the components
of green tea. Only in recent years, however, has medical research investigated this phenomenon. A small clinical study conducted
by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Tokyo has now demonstrated what users already knew: that L-theanine supplementation
improves the quality of sleep, reduces the need for sleep, and eliminates the fatigue which usually accompanies poor sleep.

A lesser-known property of green tea is its activity against fat accumulation. A recent study teased out the components of
tea which is responsible for this anti-obesity effect — it turns out that both caffeine and L-theanine are responsible, and
that they work synergistically.
