Genistein taken in infancy may prevent obesity later in life.
Genistein, an isoflavone extracted from soybeans, has shown a wide variety of intriguing and beneficial effects when used
as a supplement. Among these are effects on insulin levels, sugar metabolism, and body fat.
In a new variation on this theme, it has been found that when mice are given genistein supplements during their first five
days of life they become less fat later in life. Genistein is already available for infants (in the U.S., at least) in soy-based
baby formulas. It may turn out that babies fed these products will turn out to be leaner adults.
